Contec's CAN 2.0B Communication Wireless LAN/USB Converter Unit is a device used to enable wireless connectivity and data communication in industrial and embedded systems. An authenticated attacker can upload specially crafted files that bypass validation controls, leading to arbitrary code execution on the device and potentially compromising entire communication systems that depend on it.
Technical details
This is an unrestricted file upload vulnerability (CWE-434) in the Contec CAN 2.0B Converter Unit that allows arbitrary code execution. The vulnerability requires high-privilege authentication to exploit but does not require user interaction. An authenticated remote attacker can upload a specially crafted file that bypasses file type validation, resulting in arbitrary code execution on the affected device. Vulnerable firmware versions include CAN-2-WF and CAN-2-USB prior to version 2.20. The vendor has released patched firmware versions that should be applied immediately.
