CVE-2026-70175: Microsoft ASP.NET Core Identity weak password recovery in confirmation flow

CVE-2026-70175 · Severity: high · CVSS 8.1 · Published 2026-10-13

ASP.NET Core Identity, used to manage user authentication in web applications, has a flaw in its password reset and email confirmation flows. An attacker can intercept or manipulate the request to redirect password reset and confirmation emails to an attacker-controlled address instead of the user's legitimate email, potentially allowing account takeover.

Technical details

The vulnerability exists in Microsoft.AspNetCore.Identity and Microsoft.AspNetCore.Identity.UI where password-reset and email-confirmation flows send emails to an unvalidated request address rather than the user's canonical stored email address. This allows attackers to redirect sensitive reset tokens and confirmation links to attacker-controlled mailboxes. An attacker with network access to exploit this weakness can bypass normal email-based account recovery safeguards and gain unauthorized access to user accounts.
