Executive brief
A security vulnerability exists in a Windows component responsible for managing cloud-based files. If exploited, a person who already has basic access to a computer could gain full administrative control over the system. This could allow them to view sensitive data, disable security software, or disrupt business operations.
Technical details
A use-after-free vulnerability (CWE-416) exists in the Windows Cloud Files Mini Filter Driver (cldflt.sys). The flaw is triggered when the driver improperly handles objects in memory, allowing a locally authenticated attacker with low privileges to execute code with SYSTEM-level permissions. The attack vector is local, requiring no user interaction. Microsoft has released security updates to address this issue across multiple versions of Windows 10, Windows 11, and Windows Server.
