Executive brief
A security vulnerability has been identified in the Windows graphics component that could allow a user with basic access to a computer to gain full administrative control. This flaw affects various versions of Windows and Windows Server, potentially allowing an attacker to bypass security restrictions and access sensitive data or install malicious software. Microsoft has released security updates to address this issue, and organizations should apply these patches to protect their systems from local privilege escalation.
Technical details
This vulnerability is classified as an out-of-bounds read (CWE-125) within the Windows Win32K - GRFX component. The flaw is triggered when the kernel-mode driver improperly handles objects in memory, allowing an attacker to read data outside of intended buffers. To exploit this, an attacker must first have local access to the target system with low-privileged user credentials. Successful exploitation enables the attacker to elevate their privileges to SYSTEM level, granting full control over the affected host. Microsoft has addressed this vulnerability in the July 2026 security update cycle.
