Executive brief
A security vulnerability exists in the Windows Audio Service, which manages sound and audio playback for the operating system. An attacker who already has basic access to a computer could exploit this flaw to gain full administrative control over the system. This could allow them to install malicious software, view or delete sensitive data, or create new accounts with full user rights.
Technical details
This vulnerability is a race condition (CWE-362) and use-after-free (CWE-416) issue within the Windows Audio Service. An authorized attacker with local access can exploit improper synchronization of shared resources to execute code with elevated privileges. The attack requires local authentication but no user interaction. Microsoft has released security updates to address this issue in affected versions of Windows 11.
