CVE-2026-50417: Microsoft Windows NTFS heap overflow

CVE-2026-50417 · Severity: high · CVSS 7.8 · Published 2026-07-14

Technologies: Microsoft Windows Server 2012, Microsoft Windows 10, Microsoft Windows 11. Vendors: Microsoft.

Executive brief

A security vulnerability has been identified in the Windows NTFS file system, which is the primary system used by Windows to store and retrieve files on hard drives. An attacker who already has basic access to a computer could exploit this flaw to gain full control over the system or execute malicious code. This could lead to the theft of sensitive data, disruption of operations, or further compromise of the corporate network.

Technical details

This vulnerability is classified as a heap-based buffer overflow (CWE-122) resulting from improper input validation (CWE-20) within the Windows NTFS driver. The flaw is triggered locally by an authenticated user with low privileges (PR:L). By providing specially crafted input to the NTFS component, an attacker can overflow memory buffers in the heap, leading to arbitrary code execution in the context of the kernel or a highly privileged service. Microsoft has released security updates to address this issue across multiple versions of Windows 10, Windows 11, and Windows Server 2012.
