Vendors: Microsoft.

Executive brief

A security vulnerability exists in the Windows StateRepository API, a component that manages application data and settings. An attacker who already has basic access to a computer could exploit this flaw to gain higher-level administrative privileges. This could allow them to take full control of the system, access sensitive data, or disrupt operations.

Technical details

This vulnerability is classified as an improper authorization issue (CWE-285) and insufficient granularity of access control (CWE-1220) within the Windows StateRepository API. An attacker with low-privileged local access can exploit the lack of fine-grained access controls to elevate their privileges to a higher level. The attack vector is local, requiring the attacker to already have the ability to execute code on the target system, but it requires no user interaction. Microsoft has released security updates to address this issue across various versions of Windows 10, Windows 11, and Windows Server.
