Executive brief
A vulnerability exists in the management controller (BMC) of certain Supermicro servers, which is the component used for remote hardware monitoring and maintenance. An attacker with administrative access can exploit the email notification settings to run unauthorized commands on the controller. This could lead to a complete takeover of the server management system, permanent hardware compromise, or a total service outage.
Technical details
This vulnerability is classified as an OS Command Injection (CWE-78) within the SMTP service configuration of the Supermicro Baseboard Management Controller (BMC) firmware. An attacker who has already obtained administrator-level privileges can inject specially crafted characters into the SMTP configuration fields. These characters are improperly neutralized, leading to the execution of unintended system commands during process invocation. Successful exploitation allows for arbitrary code execution, denial-of-service, or permanent compromise of the BMC. The attack is reachable over the network but requires high privileges (PR:H). Supermicro has released updated firmware versions for affected motherboard models to mitigate this issue.
