Executive brief
A security vulnerability has been identified in the Windows Win32K component, which handles graphics and window management. An attacker who already has basic access to a computer could exploit this flaw to gain full administrative control over the system. This could allow them to view sensitive data, install malicious software, or disrupt operations.
Technical details
A use-after-free (UAF) vulnerability exists in the Windows Win32K kernel-mode driver, specifically within the ICOMP component. The flaw is triggered when the system improperly handles objects in memory, allowing an attacker to reuse a memory pointer after it has been freed. To exploit this, an attacker must have local access to the system and the ability to execute a specially crafted application. Successful exploitation allows the attacker to gain SYSTEM privileges. Microsoft has released security updates to address this issue across affected versions of Windows 11 and Windows Server 2025.
