Intel PROSet/Wireless WiFi Software is a driver package for wireless network adapters used on Windows systems. A null pointer dereference in the Ring 2 device drivers allows an unauthenticated attacker on the same network to crash the system, causing a denial of service. No user interaction is required; an attacker simply needs to transmit specially crafted wireless packets.
Technical details
This vulnerability is a null pointer dereference in the Ring 2 device drivers of Intel PROSet/Wireless WiFi Software for Windows. The issue resides in the wireless driver's packet handling code, where insufficient validation of incoming wireless frames can cause a kernel-level crash. An unauthenticated network adversary can exploit this via adjacent network access by transmitting specially crafted wireless packets; low attack complexity and no user interaction are required. Successful exploitation results in denial of service through system crash or driver hang. Intel has released software updates to address this and related vulnerabilities in the advisory INTEL-SA-01422.
