Executive brief
Intel PROSet/Wireless WiFi Software is a driver package that manages wireless network connectivity on Windows systems. A flaw in the device driver's condition-checking logic allows a network attacker to crash the system or render WiFi inoperable, disrupting business operations and user productivity. An attacker on the adjacent network (e.g., nearby WiFi range) needs no authentication or user interaction to trigger the vulnerability.
Technical details
This vulnerability is an improper conditions check in Intel PROSet/Wireless WiFi Software's Ring 2 device driver for Windows. The flaw allows a network adversary to craft specially-formed packets that trigger a denial-of-service condition when processed by the WiFi driver. Attack vector is adjacent network access (AV:A) with no privileges or user interaction required. An attacker can cause system unavailability by exploiting this logic error in the driver's packet-handling code. Patches are available from Intel as part of advisory INTEL-SA-01422.
