Executive brief

The JoomSport plugin for WordPress, which is used to manage sports leagues and team data, contains a security flaw that allows low-level users to bypass authorization checks. An authenticated attacker, such as a subscriber, could modify sports league data including group names, participants, and round settings. This could lead to unauthorized changes in sports standings or league configurations, potentially disrupting the accuracy of the site's sports data.

Technical details

The JoomSport plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to a missing authorization check (CWE-862) in all versions up to and including 5.7.8. The vulnerability exists because the plugin fails to properly verify user permissions before allowing actions related to season group management. An authenticated attacker with subscriber-level privileges or higher can create new season groups or modify existing group names, participants, and round-type options. Exploitation requires the attacker to obtain the 'joomsportajaxnonce', which is inadvertently exposed on frontend pages where a JoomSport shortcode is rendered. A patch has been released in the plugin's trunk.
