A vulnerability in the AMD RAID driver could allow a local user to gain unauthorized control over the computer's memory. This driver is responsible for managing data storage across multiple hard drives for performance and reliability. If exploited, an attacker could gain full administrative control over the system, potentially leading to data theft or the installation of persistent malware.
Technical details
The AMD RAID driver suffers from an improper input validation vulnerability (CWE-1220). A local attacker with low privileges can provide crafted input that causes the driver to reference an arbitrary memory location. This flaw can be leveraged to achieve local privilege escalation (LPE) and execute arbitrary code with kernel-level permissions. While the attack requires local access and some level of user interaction, the impact is high as it compromises the integrity and confidentiality of the entire system. AMD has addressed this in security bulletin AMD-SB-4016.
