Executive brief

A security vulnerability in the HipChat integration plugin for Atlassian Bitbucket, Confluence, and Jira allows unauthorized users to view the secret communication key used to connect these services. If an attacker obtains this key, they could gain full control over the linked HipChat instance, potentially accessing private conversations or disrupting communications. This issue affects organizations that have integrated their Atlassian servers with HipChat.

Technical details

The vulnerability is classified as an information disclosure (CWE-200) where the HipChat integration plugin exposes its secret communication key on various administration and application pages. In Bitbucket Server, the key is exposed on administration pages and requires Admin access to exploit. In Confluence, the key can be accessed by users with 'Create Space' permissions (often a default for all users), Space Admin permissions, or System Admin permissions. An attacker who successfully retrieves this secret key can gain full control over the linked HipChat instance. The issue is resolved by upgrading the affected plugins to version 7.8.17 or higher, or by upgrading the host Atlassian products to their respective fixed maintenance releases.
